Miami, Florida - U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists, assigned to Miami International Airport, and K-9 “Sherry”, a three year old Beagle and member of the Beagle Brigade, gave numerous demonstrations to hundreds of South Florida school students on opening day at the first Miami International Agriculture & Cattle Show,

at the Miami-Dade County Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center at Tropical Park and explained the mission of CBP and its importance in protecting our nation’s domestic agriculture industry.

CBP, South Florida and Miami-Dade County have a long evolving history in agriculture and cattle in a state known for both. Everyday CBP agriculture specialist examine passengers, their bags and cargo, arriving into ports all across the nation, including Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami, searching for potential threats to America’s agriculture industry such as Mediterranean Fruit Fly and/or Foot and Mouth Disease.

A CBP agriculture specialist and K-9 Sherry discover food products concealed in a suit case as part of demonstration at the first Miami International Agriculture and Cattle Show.

CBP’s agriculture mission is vitally important to Florida as the third largest cattle state east of the Mississippi and 12th in the nation and to Miami-Dade County where agriculture is second only behind tourism as an economic engine for the community.

The four day event is expected to attract regional agri-business interests and others, from South America, Central America, the Caribbean and other parts of the World and CBP’s participation was significant in that it represents the agency’s commitment to educate the public and work with the community’s industries to facilitate legitimate travel, trade and commerce.
