“Many corn growers supply corn to Frito-Lay and have worked well with the company in the past,” said NCGA President Bob Dickey, a farmer in Laurel, Neb. “We’re excited to see these changes. And, of course, we’re hoping that someday we can eat all our favorite corn snacks out of corn-based bags.”

As part of its continuing commitment to deliver value to consumers, Frito-Lay North America reported that it recently began to add 20 percent more product into its take-home sized Doritos, Tostitos, Cheetos and Fritos products, without increasing the price. No other details were announced.

In time for Earth Day, Frito-Lay also announced that its Sun Chips brand will be the first to test a fully compostable snack chip bag made from PLA. According to a news release, the outer layer of packaging on 10½ oz size Sun Chips snack bags will be made with PLA; by Earth Day 2010, the foodmaker plans to rollout a package for its Sun Chips snacks where all layers are made from PLA material so the package is 100 percent compostable.
