National Corn Growers Association Urges Member Action on Food Safety Legislation PDF Print E-mail

Washington, DC - The National Corn Growers Association asks growers to reach out to their representatives early this week, requesting them to urge House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman and Ranking Member Joe Barton to not bypass regular order and rules procedures in the House of Representatives by bringing the Food Safety Enhancement Act, H.R. 2749, up on the suspension calendar.

If the legislation is brought up on suspension on the House floor, the bill would be subject to limited debate. Suspension calendar items are generally made up of non-controversial items, such as re-naming a building.

“This is a very important issue to our industry and it needs to go through the proper channels before being voted on,” NCGA President Bob Dickey said. “This legislation could have significant regulatory implications for our farming operations and it should be reviewed carefully by the House Agriculture Committee before moving to the House floor. NCGA is calling on all growers express concerns by contacting their representatives within the next few days.”

The bill in its current form, which was passed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee in June, still includes some of NCGA’s initial concerns – such as expanded authorization for the Food and Drug Administration to mandate facility-specific product safety standards, allowing on-farm inspection and regulation and access to on-farm records which bring concerns of confidentiality.
